“Two” toss or not “two” toss…

“Two” toss or not “two” toss… it’s your wedding.

The toss garter and bouquet toss.

Within our wonderful multicultural society, I have discovered many people living in Bahrain who have little or no knowledge about the wedding garter and its history and significance, nor the toss garter. When I explain, an expression of interest and sometimes amusement is evident when hearing about this tradition for the first time.

Hence the short blog.

Steeped in tradition, (hundreds of years ago), the bride’s garter is said to have been invented to save pieces of her wedding gown being torn off for good luck. Hence, the garter was given out as the lucky piece.

Brides these days have the wonderful freedom of adapting and creating their wedding to suit themselves. A bride who wishes to incorporate the toss garter into her wedding, will usually wear two garters. One to keep and one to toss. The garter the bride keeps, is usually the more decorative or costly garter of the two, a garter with sentimental value or a garter passed down within the family. The toss garter is worn lower on the leg than the keepsake garter and is removed by the groom to toss to bachelors attending the wedding. It is said that the lucky bachelor who catches the garter will be the next to marry.

The bouquet toss is usually performed first with the bride tossing the bouquet followed by the garter toss. As with the garter toss, if you catch the bouquet……you are next in line for marriage.

I don’t know about the proven good luck of catching the garter or bouquet, but I do know that if you choose to incorporate the “tosses” into your wedding day, you will have great, funny photos.
